Rachel Hilbert, Special Events Coordinator for Food Lifeline in
Washington submitted the total of food & fund contributions
from students of the University of Washington and the three drives
they held:
Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, April 2010: 40 pounds Chi Psi Fraternity & UW Daily Newspaper "Stuff the
Bus" Food & Fund Drive, May 2010: 12,446 pounds and
$3,967 donated. UW Kappa Psi-School of Pharmacy, May 2010: 98 pounds
With most foodbanks, $1 is equivalent to about 5 pounds of food
because of the many resources available to them. So along with the
12,584 pounds of food, there is also 19,835 pounds via the cash
contributions, for a total of 22,419 pounds of food for the hungry
citizens of Western Washington.

Shannon O'Connor, Product Solicitation Coordinator of the St. Louis
Area Foodbank, sends in a recap of this year's CKI convention in
St. Louis, Missouri:
On behalf of the St. Louis Area Foodbank, it was
a true pleasure to attend and participate in the CKI Convention
held at Washington University August 5, 2010. Between the Foodbank
and STUFH, we were able to promote our organizations’ efforts,
with emphasis on hosting Food Drives and Food Collections geared
towards college students. Having students from all across the nation
allowed us to broaden our ideas in terms of collecting food, as
well as learn from
their steps in preparing for food drives and helping enhance community
awareness. It is important to reach out to your neighboring schools
to form creative ideas and build relationships based on one common
goal--fighting hunger. Most of the students seemed to be familiar
with Foodbank and STUFH; however after meeting with us and reviewing
our brief handouts, they formed a more accurate understanding of
our purpose and how they can take action within their own university
organizations and fellow students. It is important for our national
organizations to attend events such as the CKI Convention to network
with others who are trying to make a difference. Lenora Young and
I felt very blessed and honored for the opportunity to represent
the St. Louis Area Foodbank and take part in such a proactive experience.
We look forward to working with your organization and team members
in the near future and encourage you to contact us for any future
events. Thank you!
Best Wishes,
Shannon O’Connor

• Dr. Juliet Berling of SUNY Binghamton once again is proud
to report that her students increased their giving to help the less
fortunate of their local communities. They raised over 16,400 pounds
of food and other materials which will support many of the charities
and food banks in the Southern Tier.
• Texas Christian University has always supported those in
need with varied programs such as Trash To Treasure and Meals on
Wheels. This year, Susan Frye of the Tarrant Area Food Bank reports
that their students raised 2,000 pounds of food in addition to their
week long canstruction challege which raised 10,000 pounds, making
a total of 12,000 pounds of foodstuff to help fight hunger in the
Fort Worth area.

Chuck Gill, Assistant Director of the Food Bank For Larimer County
once again reports the amazing results achieved by Colorado State
University. The students and faculty of CSU began a tradition over
20 years ago to fight hunger in their local communities. They donate
cans of food to place and circle their campus center known as the
Oval and each year the drive gets even more awesome. In this past
academic year, they raised 90,000
pounds of food and $27,000 in cash donations. Each dollar is equivalent
to 4 pounds of food in Colorado so the dollars convert into 108,000
pounds for a total of 198,000 pounds of food raised to feed the
hungry of the Larimer County area.
To learn more about this fantastic effort that makes
such a difference for people in need, go to www.slce.colostate.edu/cans-around-the-oval.aspx.
You will also find an impressive video which describes
the effort in detail. (Also available below in .wmv

• Terre Haute Catholic Charities of Indiana reports that Indiana
State University came through with tremendous support raising approximately
20,000 pounds of food for the hungry, according to Director Tom
Kuhl. Tom also reports that the spirited students of Rose Hulman
University donated over 5,000 pounds to help those in need.
• Reverend Bobby DeNegal of the Middle Georgia Foodbank in
Macon reports that the caring students of Mercer University raised
2875 pounds of much needed food for the Macon area.
• Deb McGeorge of the Food for Lane County Foodbank
in Oregon reports that their annual Spring Scrimmage Food Drive
brought in 45,727 pounds of food and $739.30 in cash contributions.
Oregon converts each dollar to six pounds of food so the total raised
was just over 50,000. The Scrimmage is such a huge success because
admission is free, the Ducks always win, and the ten thousand students
attending are asked to bring food for the hungry. Their support
is always overwhelming. Deb also reports that this coming year is
going to break all records as there is going to be an immense effort
at the University of Oregon at Eugene.
8/3/10
Joe Fox, operations manager for the Munsie Mission in Anderson,
Indiana, reports that while Ball State raised over 1,000 pounds
of needed food for the hungry, even more significant is the awesome
volunteer support the unversity gives their food bank. 450 volunteers
will be coming in this August and over the past year, more than
2,000 university volunteers came in to help! That's fantastic support
from a college that really cares.

Molly McGlinchy of the Capital Area Food Bank in DC reports that
the many universities throughout the District of Columbia have once
again come through with tremendous support for their local foodbank.
Over 8,000 pounds of food has been raised in the past academic year
by:
George Washington (over 4,000);
Catholic University (230 pounds);
Georgetown (over 2,000 pounds with their Green Move Out);
Howard (200 pounds);
Prince George Community College (382 pounds); and
University of Maryland (879 pounds).
College students of the District of Columbia are aware
and care about the less fortunate of their local community.

From Jeanna Kindle, Chief Product Acquisitions Officer
at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank:
Dan, I can't believe how much this program has
grown since you first introduced me to STUFH. In 2009, 125 universities,
colleges, trade schools, high schools, fraternities, sororities,
and other educational facilities hosted food drives.
We received a total of 682,088 lbs in 2009 from
1,146 Food Drive sponsors. As a result of STUFH, 125 of the sponsors
and 66,851 pounds were from educational facilities! What makes this
even more interesting is that as the economy remained in the doldrums
students throughout Los Angeles County continued to find new and
innovative ways to make a difference to those in need.
The students, faculty, and organizations at USC
continued with their Dining Dollars Program. In essence, the students
who have extra funds on their dining cards, purchase shelf stable
food and donate that product to the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.
The USC and UCLA Crosstown Food Drive Rivalry continued -- in 2009,
they ended the year with "The Battle of the Cans" at the
annual cross town rivalry football game. Although USC was victorious
on the field for the third straight year, UCLA brought in the most
cans for the third straight year. Nevertheless, I told both my daughter-in-laws
(who work at the competing schools) Alexandria (USC School of Architecture)
and Nakia (UCLA Transportation Department) that I love them both
equally.
Crescendo Charter School gave both USC and UCLA
a run for top Food Drive Donor from an educational facility by bringing
in 5,100 lbs of product. It looks as if you're starting them off
younger every year. Thanks to Principal Scott McGuire, the dedicated
staff, students, and parents at Crescendo.
Dan Khan, on behalf of those in need, I thank
you for your hard work and efforts.

Ryan McCambridge, the food share coordinator for the Linn and Benton
Counties Community Food Share in Corvallis, Oregon was proud to
report that Oregon State University once again increased their support
for their food bank by raising over $100,000 dollars to help feed
the hungry. In terms of pounds of food, Ryan noted that the Oregon
correlation is $1.00 for 6 pounds but he feels that 4-1 is more
realistic. Going by that, Oregon State raised 400,000 pounds to
feed those struggling families in their local communities. Congratulations
to OSU for their generosity and compassion for the less fortunate
in our society.

The 2010 Buffalo Can Challenge in and around Boulder Colorado was
completed with great success once again this year. A great recap
was provided:
Buffalo Can Challenge (BuCC) is an annual campus-wide
canned food drive designed to raise awareness about hunger in our
community and to assist in alleviating hunger in Boulder County.
The BuCC is a competition in which registered campus groups design
and build sculptures in a fun and creative way using donated non-perishable
food items. Monetary donations are also collected. All food and
monetary gifts are donated to Community Food Share, Boulder and
Broomfield County’s food bank.
Our emphasis for BuCC in 2010 can be summed into
four major elements:
Raising food and awareness for poverty level income citizens
of Boulder County.
CU student, staff and faculty engagement in fighting hunger
in Boulder County.
Greater Boulder County citizen participation in a university
created event.
Education of the issues of hunger in Boulder and surrounding
areas.
We did this by…
Having groups register as teams and collect canned food
and making structures out of the food they collected.
Asking for donations from individuals on campus using large
bins acquired from Community Food Share.
Speaking to various student groups, staff and faculty
Asking for cash donations.
Collaborating with Interactive Theater (ITP) and having
them create performances that illustrated hunger.
Collaborating with Transportation Services to have a Buff
Bus parked on campus the day before Canstruction to raise awareness
and gather donations.
Collaborating with the Recreation Center to use Carlson
Gymnasium as the site for teams to build their structures and
host public viewing.
Working with a wide variety of student groups, faculty
and staff that supported BuCC’s mission to work towards
alleviating hunger in Boulder while educating the public about
issues of hunger in Boulder and surrounding areas.
This year, BuCC collected 5,543 lbs of food for the Boulder
Community Food Share. That is enough food to feed a family of 5
for 1 year! 8 teams participated in this year’s Canstruction,
with an estimated 1784+ individuals participating. The Architecture
and Planning group won 1st prize which was $500 to donate to the
non-profit of their choice.
Pictures of the event were provided and are available on the PICTURES
page.

A great letter from Martha Henk, Executive Director of the Food
Bank of East Alabama, detailing the efforts that make the Auburn
University - University of Alabama Food Fight rivalry the success
that it is.
For the past sixteen years, Auburn University
and the University of Alabama students have competed with each other
in the weeks prior to the State's biggest football game to see which
University could raise the most food for their local food bank.
The Auburn University Student Government Association partners with
the Food Bank in this effort.
The challenge has grown from a relatively small-scale
event with about 1,000 pounds donated to becoming one of the largest
food drives in the State. Last year, Alabama captured the trophy
after Aiburn University students collected an amazing 164,034 pounds-compared
to University of Alabama's 175,653 pounds. The value of last year's
donation by Auburn University is estimated to be more than $245,000!
The total pounds collected by both schools during
this friendly competition over the past sixteen years is the equivalent
of more than 826,880 meals or 48 tractor-trailer loads.
The real winners of this annual competition are
the hungry families fed through the food bank network. This food
is channeled into the senior programs, low-income day cares, emergency
food pantries, missions and rehabilitation centers that are served
by the Food Bank of East Alabama and the West Alabama Food Bank.

Tara Sheperd, West Virginia Assistant District Administrator &
Program Administrator for Community Bread Basket writes in with
a report of a service project with the local Circle K chapter.
Here is a report of the service project Wheeling
Jesuit Circle K (Wheeling, West Virginia) of the West Virginia District
did for STUFH. Students put boxes in lobby of each dorm building.
All food was collected on May 10, 2010 and was donated to the Community
Bread Basket, Inc (3501 West Street, PO Box 154, Weirton, WV 26062.
Phone 304-748-7595) The club collected 406 items worth $443.38.
The total poundage was 295.59. As I told you in our conversation
our state food bank (Mountaineer Food Bank) calculates pounds using
the ratio $1.50 worth of food = 1lb of food.
The image can be seen on the PICTURES
page with the other STUFH-related images.
